Sod Calculator

To find how much sod you need, divide your lawn area by the size of one piece. A standard sod slab covers about 10 square feet and a pallet about 450 square feet, so a 1,000 square foot lawn needs roughly 100 slabs or a little over 2 pallets. Add about 5 percent for trimming around edges and curves.

Sizes vary by supplier - a typical slab is about 10 sq ft and a pallet about 450. We add 5% for trimming.

Measure and add a margin

Measure the lawn in square feet (break odd shapes into rectangles), then divide by the slab or pallet size. We add 5 percent by default for trimming around beds, paths, and curves.

Sod piece sizes vary by region and farm, so confirm the coverage with your supplier before ordering.

Order and lay quickly

Sod is perishable. Order it to arrive on or just before laying day, prepare and lightly moisten the soil first, and install it the same day it is delivered.

Stagger the seams like bricks and water thoroughly right after laying.

How many square feet in a pallet of sod?

Typically about 450 square feet, though it ranges from roughly 400 to 500 depending on the farm and region. Confirm with your supplier.
