Sand Calculator

To find how much sand you need, multiply the area by the depth and divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by about 1.35 for tons. One cubic yard of dry sand weighs roughly 2,700 lb (about 1.35 tons); wet sand weighs more.

1 in for a paver setting bed, 2 in for leveling, deeper to fill a sandbox.

Common sand depths

For a paver or flagstone setting bed, a 1 inch layer of bedding sand is standard over a compacted base. For general leveling, 2 inches is typical. To fill a sandbox, measure the inside depth you want.

Enter length and width in feet and your depth; the calculator returns cubic yards, an estimated weight, and a bag count.

Picking the right sand

Use coarse, sharp sand (often called paver or all-purpose sand) under pavers, not soft play sand, which shifts. Polymeric sand is a separate product used only to fill the joints after pavers are set.

Sand is sold bagged and in bulk. For anything beyond a small project, bulk by the cubic yard or ton beats carrying many 50 lb bags.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a yard of sand weigh?

About 2,200 to 2,900 pounds (roughly 1.1 to 1.45 tons). Dry sand is near 2,700 lb per cubic yard; wet sand is heavier.

How many 50 lb bags of sand in a cubic yard?

A 50 lb bag of sand is about 0.5 cubic feet, so a cubic yard (27 cu ft) is about 54 bags.

How much sand do I need under pavers?

A 1 inch bedding layer of coarse sand over a compacted gravel base. Do not use a thick sand layer as the main base, or the pavers will settle unevenly.
